About the book

A Past Worth Telling presents a collection of poems by author Mary Ann Niemczura that recounts her childhood in rural Western Massachusetts in the 1940s and early 1950s, a time that offered carefree, innocent days of playing, learning, and exploring with minimal adult supervision. It was a time and place that children appreciated nature and its creatures, when children savored horehound drops, penny candy, Mary Ann cookies, crackers, and pickles from the barrel at the Old Sturbridge Village General Store—with the wooden Indian chief outside.

This poetical memoir recalls fond childhood days as seen through the eyes of Niemczura and her sisters. She also recalls life in Colorado, Germany, and Central New York. These memories are documented for future generations and for anyone interested in such experiences.

“Her writing is joyful and uplifting but poignant at times. To her credit, she covers life’s winding road with humor and reality.”

—Jerome F. Melvin, PhD, retired school Superintendent of the North Syracuse Central Schools in North Syracuse, New York

This is a great title and I love the idea of a poetical memoir, most unusual. I found it on amazon – I wondered if for you have considered putting in a link direct to Amazon (both UK and US) from this page? Best of luck with your book, Mary Ann.

    • How kind of you to comment about the title. My English major daughter helped me when I told her I wanted something “different” to use. Do you mean Amazon link to UK on my author page? How kind of you to suggest that. Let me know what you think of the book after you have read it. Also consider writing a review on Amazon if you get time. All the best to you and your writing.

You can tell your daughter it was an inspired choice. Of course I’ll leave a review – I’m a bit behind on my reading at the moment so it won’t be straight away but I’ll let you know.

    • Take a look at the revised page About the Author and see if that helps. Thanks again for the suggestion, fellow writer.

I just read the first poem, on the Amazon site – so funny! I mean to ask where in NY you are but I think it may be Syracuse, or nearby. I grew up there, on the western edge of town, in the 50’s. 🙂

Looking forward to the read! I hope you’re doing well. I probably wasn’t one of your favorite students, but I certainly have many great memories in your classroom. Congrats on your book!

    • Thank you for the comment. Now I am intrigued. What year did you graduate and how many years did you take German? All through high school or just through 3rd year which would have been Regents year. Please tell me what you are doing today and where you live. My book was published in 2014 as you noticed. Did you do any video conferences with German schools? Be well and enjoy your weekend and Easter.

Yes! I graduated in 2008. Took German with you all throughout high school. I think our class was the first to do the video conferences with students from Germany. We even had exchange students spend a week or two when we were seniors.

Time flies, I am married now. We live down in Tully, so still close to home. I own my own business, we install radon mitigation systems and I also do home inspections. I will send a friend request on Facebook. Glad we were able to connect!
