Following in the footsteps of my parents,
we phoned our daughter first thing today
and sang Happy Birthday. She and her
friends are off on a short trip to RI.
My parents lived in Colorado
in a different time zone two hours
earlier than in Upstate NY. When I
normally left the house for teaching,
it was in the wee hours so my parents
had to be up by dawn to phone me and
sing. Fortunately, our two children live in
the same time zone. We have left
our voices on answering machines when
they are not able to answer. We also
follow another tradition my parents did
when I no longer lived at home. Enclosed
with my birthday card was a check for a
small amount depending upon the
birthday. So, if I was twenty-eight for
example, the check was written for
the amount of $28.28. And on it went year
after year. My husband switched it up
when our two needed college money. He
wrote a more generous amount of say
$228. 28 for a twenty-eight birthday.
Carrying on traditions in families is
an important way to show love
and caring for one another. I am
convinced my parents sent us and our
daughter identical green grasshoppers as
a way of hopping by for a short visit with
us – the birthday grasshopper!
What lovely birthday traditions you have! How often are grasshoppers included???

Anne, thank you for the fine comment. Grasshoppers? Only this year and first time ever. Strange that our daughter had an identical visitor today. Grandma and Grandpa visiting both of us. Such grand fun! Enjoy the weekend.

Anne, ours was on the front door mat on the porch and probably asleep. Not certain where our daughter saw hers but probably a similar location. oxox

Adding an extra digit to the birthday cheque appears to do justice to our inflation-ridden era! These are fine family traditions which we also have followed for the past fifty years or so. Have a joyful weekend, Mary Ann!

Tom, thank you for your insightful comment. A new chapter as begun for the birthday girl. Family traditions are enduring signs of love and joy. You captured the essences very well and thank you for your well wishes. With two wonderful children, you and your sister Emily, we have been truly blessed. Hope the hurricane does not affect you. Clare, a cooler day with a misty sort of rain. Finally more like this time of year. Watched two squirrels digging outside for something edible. As long as they stay away from the garden… Have a great day and rest of your week. oxox

Lovely birthday traditions in your family, Mary, The phone calls at the start of the day is very touching – a heartfelt gesture letting your family know you are thinking about them on their birthday and how important they are to you. The cheque and gift of money is such a practical birthday gift. It was generous of your husband to increase the amount to your daughters when they were in college. Birthday traditions in my family are similar – a text message on the morning of someone’s birthday and maybe a surprise birthday cake left at home when the birthday person is out.

Mabel, thank you. Your birthday traditions are equally lovely and so 21st century with a text. Love and family are so important. Memories are made whenever families come together. Love the idea of a birthday cake left as a surprise. Our son and daughter live too far away to do that so sometimes we order one online. When they were home, I baked the cakes they wanted – usually chocolate with chocolate frosting. ^^__^^

Ordering cakes online and getting them delivered to someone’s place for their birthday is a nice surprise. It is lovely you bake birthday cakes when they are home. Those are always the best kinds of cakes. Your chocolate cake with chocolate frosting sounds delightful 🙂

Mabel, my children had “sweet tooths” and loved things chocolate. The expression is to have a sweet tooth when a person loves sweets. Somehow it looks odd to make the expression plural “tooths” instead of “teeth.” My secret to a moist cake was to add boiling water just before putting it in the oven to bake. Our favorite recipe. oxox
