Life’s Unexpected Pleasures

Noticing that we had a new mail carrier, I
opened the garage door for the large package
she carried. We chatted. Then I offered her
some small snacks. She had not had lunch
and was most appreciative. A hug followed.
No time to escape her explanation that

she is a hugger through her masked face.
I did not flinch but hugged her back.
Pandemic or no pandemic. How does one
physical distance a hug? Virtually?
Later on a private walk through an
empty elementary school lot, we

reflected on the tape wrapped securely on
the playground’s equipment. Almost imagined
the shouts of children. On the ground embedded
in sand were brightly colored stones painted
by little fingers. What messages of joy and
happiness they contained. I shared their joys!

Sat on the buddy bench all alone and took
in the scene before me with clouds threatening
to open in rain at any moment. No sooner
back home when my husband announced the
grocery delivery. He said the name Heike and
asked me to come to the garage.

What a wonderful surprise and opportunity
to once again converse in German with a
native speaker from Mainz. She looked too young
through a masked face to have grandchildren. I
must have appeared younger to her when she
inquired when I was teaching now.

After an almost fifty year career of teaching
German, I had hung up that hat about
four years ago. She initially thought I was
a native German. For all practical purposes,
I might as well be. My name means “the
German girl” after all. She sang with a

Bach group in Germany after she learned
we had sung in Prague with the Berkshire
Choral International and with the
Syracuse Chorale. New hats now: music,
writing, blogging and reading. Shine
your brightest light: life is good.

Another thoughtful post, Mary Ann. I liked how you captured the feeling of a different world in your words. All of us long for kindness and compassion in these times as we do what we need to get on with our lives. Shutting down happened so fast and I think many of us are still shocked and trying to cope with it. It is lovely to hear in your town people are staying home and at the same time, looking out for each other. Good to hear you still are able to get groceries. Here in Australia everything is pretty much shut except for grocery stores. Take care and stay safe.

    • Mabel, Thank you for your wonderful comment. The world is so different now. The weather is pleasant today and beckons us outdoors. If we have to live this way much longer, I am certain we will be exercising civil disobedience. In Upstate NY, our numbers are so low, that it makes no sense not to be open. Especially returning to church services. We are advised to wear masks now too. So is Australia going into winter weather? Are you able to walk outdoors. Even some of our parks are closed. We have to be creative in finding different places to walk and to be in nature. Enough is enough. Time to return to our normal, daily lives. Open economies once more. Thank you for the well wishes. Enjoy the weekend and be safe and stay healthy. And this too shall pass. “”__””

The world is definitely very different, and hopefully it can learn from this and live differently moving forward. That’s great in Upstate NY the infections are low, and hope it stays that way – and more nice weather for you too.

We are heading into winter weather in Australia, which isn’t ideal and I feel it best we stay closed for a while longer. We are only able to go out for essentials such as groceries or for exercising (such as a short walk and practising social distancing while at it). It doesn’t really bother me since I work out at home for exercise and like spending time indoors. Hope this week will be a good one for you, Mary. Take care.

  8. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I am enjoying reading through yours. It is difficult to not hug when you are a hugger. Just one of many challenges we are facing. I too have enjoyed seeing rocks painted and left behind on the trails near my home. It is such a lovely and uplifting gesture. Health and happiness to you. 🤗
