Today I tried my hand at a Welsh form of poetry called the cyrch a chwta (kirch-a-chóo-tah ) The basic guidelines consist of the following:
-octave or eight line stanzas
-seven syllables per line
-lines 1-6 and 8 share the same end rhyme
-line 7 cross rhymes with line 8 (internally) on either the third, fourth, or fifth syllable
Hint: picking a versatile end rhyme that can carry seven or eight lines is the key to this form.

Packing bags for a journey or holiday is a thankless task – I really dislike doing it! We have just packed our bags to return home after a fortnight away in Slovenia and now Austria. I wish you a safe journey and lots of fun when you get where you are going, Mary Ann!

Thanks, Clare for validating my feelings on packing. Such an odious task and yet so necessary. Your trip sounds lovely though. For us soon it will be Prague, Helsinki and Vienna. What are your impressions of Slovenia? Safe travels. There is no place like home and one’s own bed!

Thank you, Mary Ann. We loved Slovenia though we only stayed for a week in the Julian Alps. The people are friendly and cheerful, the food is wonderful and for us it was very cheap compared with other European countries. Prague, Helsinki and Vienna! How exciting! Safe journey to you too! 😊

The first week in Prague, we will be rehearsing and singing a concert at the castle there with the Berkshire Choral International. Neither of us has been to Helsinki so I am interested to see it. I’ll add Slovenia to my bucket list which is by now quite long. Enjoy your weekend and thank you for the comment.

Thank you, Bette. The key is the rhyme you choose. I didn’t realize that “list” was not as easy as I thought. My first attempt last fall had an easier word with which to rhyme. I would love to see one of your examples. Beautiful weekend to you!

Thank you, Peter. It’s true, I have disdain for packing suitcases. It’s quite a production for an almost three week trip abroad. Making lists is necessary but something I loathe. May you have a lovely weekend with good gardening weather.

Do you pickle and preserve any of your garden? I haven’t done pickled beans in years, but they were quite tasty when I did. Do you have to fence your garden too? Enjoy your day and week ahead.

We freeze our beans. When properly blanched, they taste very good even after a few months in the deep freeze. Yes, we have a fence. Otherwise the deer will leave very little for us to eat.

Frozen vegetables are very healthy. I love what you do with them. Ah yes, the deer. The very first year we had apples on our trees – two only – I waited until I thought they were ripe and went out to pick them. Gone! The deer carried us out. Someone told us of a soap called Irish Spring. We were advised to hang a bar from string on a branch. We tried that the next time we had apples, but now we had an abundant harvest so deer and squirrels also had a feast. Happy Gardening to you!

Packing can be such a chore. I really do like travel lists as I don’t want to forget to pack important things. Sounds like your list will get you sorted packing and I’m guessing you might have more lists for the upcoming trip. Lovely poem. It flows well and the exclamation mark at the end gave it some emphasis – reminds me of how frazzled we are when we are packing. Safe travels.

Thanks for visiting today and commenting. Packing is an odious but necessary chore. This time with music scores and folders, it is challenging to get so much into one suitcase and one carry-on for almost three weeks. Glad you enjoyed my poem. Trying to fit formats of different types of poetry forces me to trim words. Rather like packing and trimming. Since we shall be singing in Prague with the Berkshire Choral International, we need to practice and be prepared to sing a longer score. This Welsh format with 8 lines is rather like singing a scale. Good luck with packing your carrying on. Hopefully you don’t go over the weight limit. Here in Australia they are very strict about that. It is so hard to trim words from your writing when you like everything you’re written. Sometimes less is more. Hope you get more practice and also rest well (being well-rested is so important) in the lead up to all the singing 🙂
