Spellbound!

The sheer quiet beauty and peacefulness

of that first snowfall blanketing the earth

tugs at my heartstrings. Kids bundled up

play in the cold white landscape.

The kid inside me longs for those

Massachusetts childhood days of

sledding and building snowmen

and yielding to the warm fireplace

and hot chocolate our mother made

us after we came inside to board

games, Authors and Old Maid card

games. How lucky we were to be

ensconced with Mom on those days.

Carefree play outdoors no matter

the weather. Red cheeks, cold noses

and fingers brought us indoors.

The reality now is that I wish to remain

indoors and not face the elements

or drive even if I could plow through

the two feet at the end of the driveway.

Allowing the child in me to be in awe

of nature’s beauty, I gaze at the

white outdoor amusement park.  Now

let me find my sled, gloves, hat and boots!

Wow! Going down the memory lane that is so snowy but warmed by hot chocolate is so heart-warming that even snow seems a blessing. Loved it Mary Ann. Thanks for sharing.

  3. We didn’t get real snow, but we had rime ice at the top of the mountain we live on. As we walked back from the creek, we saw about 57 flakes of snow coming down. I loved your snow comments.

I can see how the child in you is stirring to be part of the winter fun. Yet, you agree in the poem that for us it is better to dream indoors about our childhood days. It is too early to let Old Man Winter knock at our doors. Three months have been set aside for him by the Seasons. The week before Christmas shall be OK with me. Have a great weekend, Mary Ann!

    • I had a big smile as I read your comment, Peter. In our area, there are no rules about when Old Man Winter drops by to visit. Sometimes I think we have two seasons when winter lasts too long. Double that three month figure even if set aside. Since we had a bit of snow in Oct., we might have a bit of snow in May. I do wish for a white Christmas and all the magic which goes with it. Thank you for such a lovely comment. Keep dreaming. Enjoy your weekend as well.

    • Thank you, Arno, for a lovely comment. Much appreciated. You probably can’t wait to go skiing and love the now. These days I love the snow for its beauty and poetry it evokes. The music changes at church now too with Advent upon us already. I don’t know where the time goes.
