Silence, snow and wind chills.
Schools closed, bitter temperatures,
no traffic. Dangerous wind chills
keep children indoors.
Grateful for the kindness of neighbors
and strangers who plowed our daughter’s
driveway during the blizzard. Caring
people who look out for others.
Whiteouts, blowing, drifting snows.
Lake effect predicted with
Storm totals just under one meter.
Occasional snow plow.
Warm and cozy indoors.
Wonder. Worry about my
husband’s drive home,
described as treacherous.
Grateful to be retired.
No longer have to brave
the elements. Mid afternoon with
sky and ground the same white.
Turned on Christmas lights to color
indoors and out one last time.
Hot soup for dinner. Relax and
grateful for family and friends.

Thanks. Photos of snow when the sky is also white are tricky. We got another foot overnight and it is still coming down. Winter in Upstate New York! 🙂

I’d love a few days of your snow. If we lived upstate, I’d need a warm pair of boots and the metabolism to drink endless cups of hot chocolate. Stay warm!

I was a sight to behold in my husband’s boots as I shuffled into the Starbucks around the corner. The whole process took one hour because of the weather. Normally it is a one minute drive.

Mary Ann, both beautiful and frightening…your words and photos show the full force of this weather. It is wonderful, touching and important how people look out for each other in these situations. When we had a mild snowstorm last month traffic ground to a halt until the farmers and owners of 4x4s came to help with chains and pulled everyone up the hill! Keep very safe and warm my friend…enjoy those soups! My one big concern is what happens when all this snow melts – will there be floods? Wishing you a cosy snug weekend indoors! Xxx

Annika, I truly appreciate your comment. Winter is sometimes quite challenging in Upstate New York. We had another foot of snow overnight and it continues. Wind chills are approaching -30 C now too. My trusty Jeep gets me through deep snow. I prefer the warm indoors and soup at this point. When I was still teaching, I mentioned to colleagues that this was a wasted snow day when it happened on a weekend. Schools were closed everywhere for severe wind chill temperatures yesterday. Your comment was a comfort in this prolonged cold arctic air and snow. When it melts, yes, there is flooding. I saw a couple of birds still enjoying the comfort of the birdhouse outside my window. The snow flakes are vertically descending on a dreamy winter wonderland. It is quite mild just a degree or two below freezing. Quite pleasant indeed!

When warm air comes in from the Pacific, which we call the Hawaiian express, we get unusually mild weather for awhile. Take care!

I have it in three languages; English, German and French. Sometimes we all use the dictionary as a aid. Or we try the variation of 9 tiles. We have tried timed turns and grumble. I even played during a blizzard with a friend next door. We played while on the phone and had all tiles face up and made words in the same places. Interesting game but too long. Try playing it online and see how it goes.

I was relieved my daughter in Indiana had temps higher than Antarctica today–well above freezing even! Stay warm.

Midwest can also have brutal weather. We have a heat wave today at 32F. Imagine that! Roads are greasy and untreated.

What photos! I live in the state where I think you grew up (MA) and after snow on Christmas Day and then a little over a week ago, it looked like that here, too. But suddenly, the temps raised today, snow is melting too fast, rain expected with flooding today, and THEN, the temps drop to 15 degrees F tomorrow. New England weather in a nutshell. 🙂

I grew up in Massachusetts until I was 10 when we moved to Colorado. Our Upstate New York winters rival what I recall in my childhood. We have a small flood in the yard next door. Another storm will dump 12″ more of snow. Such is live. Thanks for the lovely comment about my blog. Much appreciated. ^__^
