The Appointed Hour

IMG_1347
We have lost so many loved family and friends during the last six months that I dedicate this ode to their memories. Through our tears, thoughts and prayers, we know they are now in a better, much happier place. Their suffering is over.

The Appointed Hour

Quietly stepping on silk slippers
without advance warning
save the Doctor’s pronouncement
and a frightening prognosis,

the hour finally slipped in without
loud knocks on the door. Softly,
it entered through wall cracks,
unnoticed by all save the

person ravaged with advance
stages of the disease. There were
no further life-saving procedures.
Until now, brave measures had

prolonged life. Faced with the
inevitable, without fanfare and
swiftly now, the appointed
hour had arrived. Tenderly,

the loved ones touched
the ill one lying unmoving
and breathing shallowly.
Angels softly and silently

removed the suffering which had
of late magnified. With comforting
touches, the angels whispered
that the appointed hour had come.

Quite a poem! Beautiful in its sad and delicate lines. I found myself emphasizing the first word of each line as I read.

  4. I wanted to tell the story behind the clock photo in the post. My tech ed colleague and friend, Joe, made it and gave it to me when he retired. I just loved the appearance. It was then he explained that barbers use such clocks in their shops so they can simply look in the mirror to see the time instead of having to turn around and look at the clock. I have noticed that when I replace the batteries, I view the clock in the mirror to set the correct time. It is quite the conversation piece!

What a wonderful story about this most unusual clock. I thought it was an image from the internet and didn’t realise it was your own clock. I’m not surprised you have to check the time in the mirror – my brain has to do mental gymnastics to work it out otherwise.

      • That clock hangs on the kitchen wall. When visitors come in and notice the time, a conversation usually starts. The creator and tech education teacher is a great friend with wonderful ideas. I don’t think I know the time when I check. True, mental gymnastics required. Enjoy your week ahead.

That’s was a very touching poem about a life ending quietly and with dignity. I’m afraid I’ve also lost a some very dear family members over the last few years, so I read your words with bittersweet emotions.
